Man injured in bottle attack outside Hatfield nightclub

1:45pm Tuesday 1st December 2009 in News1 Photograph of the Author By Alexandra Barham2

A GANG struck a man with a bottle outside a nightclub in Hatfield town centre over the weekend.

The 22-year-old was left with a cut ear during the attack outside the Base nightclub shortly after 3am on Saturday, November 28.

Police said today the man got involved in a dispute with a group of three to four men when he was assaulted.

The culprits escaped in the direction of Asda superstore, where it is believed they confronted another group of people.

The victim suffered a cut to his ear which required hospital treatment.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Glen Turrell-Oldacre said: Thankfully incidents of this nature are rare in the area, although it was a frightening incident for the victim to go through and we are treating it very seriously.

I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident and can recognise those responsible to get in contact.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Turrell-Oldacre on the non-emergency number 0845 33 00 222 citing crime reference number B2/09/5006 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

St Albans Own East End: Jolly music on a Sunday afternoon

$

If a visitor to this city inquires of you what interesting places might s/he visit, it is easy to rattle off the usual great locations, almost all of them in the centre. Of course, if there is time to spare on a Sunday afternoon, and you’ve exhausted all of the garden centres with their teas and cakes, what else is there?

Here is one which even a number of locals have never heard of, let alone visited: St Albans Organ Museum. Situated in Camp Road and adjacent to Camp School, it was created on the site of an old Goodwin and Hart building yard by one of the yard’s owners, Charles Hart.

Although he was an extensive builder of houses including most of the 1930s homes around the museum Charles developed a keen interest in fairground rides and, in particular, the musical equipment which made visitors to the fairgrounds happy, the organs which spewed out their jolly tunes using punched hole concertina books.

Many members of the public became aware of Charles’ collecting habits when the Herts Advertiser photographed a newly redundant cinema organ which he had acquired and which he needed to find space for in his yard. Today, on Sunday afternoons you can hear the full history of the Hart collection of organs, with demonstrations from all of the collected instruments, including a few musical boxes. The Trust which is now responsible for the collection, also presents concerts, the next being on Saturday 9th November at 7.30pm by Mr John Mann.

The mysterious story of Smith’s Printing Agency, the firm which began Fleetville, takes another intriguing twist from a recent discovery, but it will require a separate blog to explain all! Meanwhile, trawling though Herts Advertiser photographs from the 1920s, I have come across pictures taken in the accommodation at Oaklands Mansion, home of the Hertfordshire Agricultural Institute; and a gymkhana which took place in the grounds of the former Marshalls Wick House, between Marshals Drive and Sandpit Lane. Finally, Fleetville Diaries, the local history people, have an unusual evening coming up.

Several members and friends of the group are going to tell the short story of one person on their family tree. Inevitably, we will be hearing of unusual people, members of the family which stood out from the crowd. Will we hear of heroes, colourful characters, or helpful lives?

More news of this event on the next blog.

Teenagers appeal after vicious attack in St Albans nightclub

1:50pm Thursday 7th November 2013 in News1 Photograph of the Author By Rebecca Perring, Reporter2

A teenager says a vicious attack at a St Albans nightclub where he was hit with a crow bar 20 times, has left him frightened to leave his house.

The 19-year-old, who remains anonymous, was brutally assaulted after leaving Batchwood nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning (November 2).

The recruitment worker says he left the Batchwood Drive nightclub at approximately 2.20am when a black car approached him in the car park.

He said: There was about three or five white males and they were wearing white shirts as far as I can remember.

They started hitting me around the head and wherever they could with crow bars and hammers around 10 to 20 times. They came from the back.

He described how he fell to the floor pouring with blood, before a man came to help him.

The teenager said: Someone came over to help and I staggered up to my friend s car. I collapsed when I got there.

After being rushed to Watford General Hospital, the teenager received stitches to the back of his head.

The men also stole his iPhone.

He says he is now only leaving his house for regular GP appointments because he is constantly vomiting and suffering with memory loss and dizziness.

He said: I was just on a quiet night out with a friend.

I don t feel scared, I just feel angry.

I don t feel like leaving the house and have left for doctors appointments and work the other day.

I don t understand why this happened to me.

You don t expect this type of thing to happen in St Albans.

The teenager is now appealing for information and said: There were taxi drivers in the area, who would have seen something.

I want them to come forward with information, so we can catch the people that did this.

Dan Phillips, from the police said they are appealing for witnesses and information in the area and people are asked to call the non emergency number on 101 quoting crime reference number: F2/14/1415.

View all posts in UncategorizedOur Christmas concert is a great chance to hear the internationally renowned His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts, a group of virtuoso wind players who specialise in playing Renaissance and Baroque music in historically appropriate styles on original instruments.

As well as accompanying the Chamber Choir in Sch tz s The Christmas Story and some other pieces, the group will also perform on their own.

The noble sound of cornetts and sackbuts was among the most versatile instrumental colours available to composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, heard in many musical contexts: in the extravagant liturgy of the great Italian and Spanish churches (above all the Basilica of St Mark s in Venice), in aristocratic entertainments across Europe and in the devotional music of Lutheran Germany.

HMSC is the pre-eminent early brass group very impressive.

Markyate singer Nickita Starck’s plea for bone marrow donor awareness through charity single for Anthony Nolan

1:00pm Thursday 28th November 2013 in News1 Photograph of the Author By Rebecca Perring, Reporter2

A Markyate pop singer has filmed a music video for a charity single she has recorded to raise awareness of bone marrow donation, a cause close to her heart.

Nickita Starck filmed Feels like home at the Prince George Pub in Watford on Saturday, November 23, to raise awareness of Anthony Nolan, a charity dedicated to blood research and encouraging people to register to be a bone marrow or stem cell donor.

The inspiration behind the video is five-year-old Emma Whittaker, who has fanconi anemia (FA), a rare blood disorder that can lead to bone marrow failure and cancer.

Emma is in her daughter s class and Ms Starck has been regularly fundraising alongside Emma s mother Rachelle Emberton.

The music video shows people signing the Anthony Nolan register and a release of balloons.

The 27-year-old said: “I was absolutely over the moon.

“On the day we had 18 more people sign the bone marrow register. I am thrilled.

“Everyone was really lovely with Emma and and her brother, James. They all loved them.

“Rachelle was very emotional.

She thought it was amazing and was very pleased.”

During the day 60 was raised through a raffle, as well as the pub s landlord donating 100.

For more information about bone marrow donation visit www.anthonynolan.org.

‘No better place than St Albans’ to launch Bazil Meade Gospel Music Academy

12:10pm Friday 29th November 2013 in News1 Photograph of the Author By Rebecca Perring, Reporter2

A new Gospel Music Academy will be launched in St Albans from next year.

The group, currently 25-strong, are being trained by the renowned Rev. Bazil Meade, one of the UK s leading Gospel Musicians and Founding Director of the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC).

Reverend Mead has a wide musical experience, performing with artistes such as Andrea Crouch, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Madonna, Elton John, Jessie J and many others.

The Bazil Meade Gospel Music Academy (BMGMA) aims to offer a unique experience for both budding vocalists and musicians and will be officially launched at the St. Albans Gospel Festival taking place on Sunday, March 16 at the Alban Arena3.

These first BMGMA students have only just started their rehearsals, but are already tuning up for an historic performance alongside LCGC at the Gospel Festival s evening Charity Fundraising Concert.

LCGC Trustee Lionel Wallace said: “We decided that there was probably no better place to launch the Academy than St Albans – the heart of British Christian witness.”

LCGC has chosen St Albans charity, The Living Room project as a beneficiary of the Gospel Festival.

The Living Room provides recovery services for people with the illness of addiction. Chief Executive Janis Feely MBE said “We are very happy to receive such great support from the planned St Albans Gospel Festival, I am sure it is going to be a tremendously uplifting occasion”.

The mayor of St Albans, Annie Brewster, also expressed her support.

She said: “I have no experience in gospel singing but I am really looking forward to joining the Choir and performing at the St Albans Gospel Festival next March. I am so grateful that the world renowned LCGC led by Rev Bazil Meade has chosen St Albans to launch its Academy which will raise funds for my charity, The Living Room.”

Registration for the BMGMA pilot remains open until January 14 next year.

Anyone interested in joining the choir should email: admin@bmgma.org.

Review of 2013: February

1:00pm Thursday 26th December 2013 in News1 St Albans & Harpenden Review: Photograph of the Author By Rebecca Perring, Reporter2

FEBRUARY Harpenden father, Alex White, tangoed his way in to the limelight by being named the champion of a Strictly Come Dancing style competition. Raising money for Cancer Research UK, Mr White said: I just thought that even if I make a fool of myself it would be for a great cause.

A father s emotional plea for information on the whereabouts of his son Murray Thompson was also reported. Murray Thompson, who was 34 and lived in St Peter s Street, went missing in April 2010.

Despite his killer, James Evans being convicted of his murder in October last year, Mr Thompson s body has still not been discovered. His father Tony Thompson said: I can t believe it has been nearly three years. It is still very difficult.

A lucky find behind a sofa at Emmaus charity shop in Batford discovered 9,000.

Andy Browne, staff member, was given the job of checking over the sofa when he found the surprise, which was later returned to the grateful residents, who had donated the sofa in the first place.

Meanwhile St Albans music community paid their respects to band manager, Paul McMullen, who died while setting up a stage at a show in Guildford.

Mr McMullen started as the marketing manager at the Alban Arena3 in 2002.

It was bad news for First Capital Connect later on in February when it was named the worst train operator, according to figures from a consumer body Which?, which completed a national survey with 7,500 passengers.

Harpenden residents were left shell-shocked when a population of Roman snails held up the building of a 3m wide and 60m long access road across Westfield Recreation ground in the town.

It was a victory for the Roman snails under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Figures obtained by the St Albans & Harpenden Review revealed 10,000 was spent on the city s part in the Olympic Torch Relay.

Van driver, Billy Hewitt, was two and a half times the drink-drive limit

8:54am Monday 27th January 2014 in News1 By Court Reporter2

A van driver, who caused a policeman and a club doorman to jump out of the way as he drove off at speed outside a St Albans night club, will be sentenced next month.

Billy Hewitt, 27, of White Hart Drive, Hemel Hempstead was convicted at St Albans Crown Court on Friday of dangerous driving in Victoria Street and Bricket Road, St Albans, on October 28, 2012.

The jury of nine women and three men were told that Police Sergeant Duncan Prior put his hand up to stop the van after he heard it crash into a parked taxi in Victoria Street.

But Hewitt ignored the officer and forced him and John Curtis to move out of the way.

Prosecutor Nick Bonehill said DS Prior was in his high visibility jacket on duty near the Havana nightclub at around half past one on the Sunday morning when he saw the van reverse at high speed into the taxi, which was parked at the junction of Victoria Street and Bricket Road.

“The van then accelerated off at speed into Bricket Road. It did a u-turn at the entrance to the police station and drove back. PS Prior put his hand up to try and get the vehicle to stop, but he didn’t and it made PS Prior and Mr Curtis, a member of the club door staff, jump out of the way,” said Mr Bonehill.

He said the van took off down Victoria Street towards the railway station, narrowly missing members of the public coming out of the club.

It went on the wrong side of the road, nearly missed another taxi and jumped a red light, the jury was told.

The registration number was noted and the van was found in a parking bay at the rear entrance of St Albans Railway Station. Another police officer stopped Mr Hewitt, who was running down Alma Road near Telford Court.

He was arrested and, on his way to Hatfield police station, told officers: “That’s my van. There are three or four others who have keys to it.

I have a set on me.”

Mr Bonehill said he gave a drink drive breath reading of 84 – nearly two and a half times over the limit.

He answered no comment in a police interview.

Judge Stephen Warner adjourned sentence for probation reports until February 14.

Family’s fundraising tribute at The Slug and Lettuce to memory of St Albans doorman Graham Smith with ‘a heart of gold’

11:50am Tuesday 28th January 2014 in News1 St Albans & Harpenden Review: Photograph of the Author By Rebecca Perring, Reporter2

A St Albans family has paid tribute to their son and brother who had a “heart of gold and terrific sense of humour” as they prepare to host a fundraising evening in memory of him.

A well-known door supervisor in the city, Graham Smith, lost his battle to cancer in October last year, aged 41.

He leaves mother and father Christine and Colin and sister, Jackie Smith. His family and friends will now host a “Big Night for Big G” at The Slug and Lettuce, St Albans, on Saturday to raise funds for Grove House, Macmillan Cancer Support and Michael Sobell Hospice, the charities which provided care and support for Mr Smith and his family in the months leading up to his death.

Mr Smith, who lived at home with his parents in Lectern Lane, was diagnosed with kidney cancer two years ago.

The tumour was removed, but a year later Mr Smith s health deteriorated after he suffered a seizure while driving in November 2012.

Despite managing to control and park his car, Mr Smith was left completely paralysed down his left side and was told he only had a few weeks to live after the discovery of a brain tumour.

The tumour was removed at National Hospital in London and Mr Smith received further treatment and was back upright and walking with assistance, within a few days.

Jackie, 40, said: “There was nothing Graham wouldn t do. He would never say no and he was determined to walk again.

“Throughout he never complained.

He was in the worst pain but he kept himself on the medication so he was as lucid as possible and had the opportunity to be with his family and friends.

“Even after surgery he was in good spirits and back to his normal self.”

A week later he returned home but within a few weeks he started to develop pains in his shoulder. Growing up in St Albans his whole life Mr Smith attended SS Alban and Stephen Catholic Junior School and Nicholas Breakspear School.

A former lorry driver, he worked at Batchwood Nightclub, and the Slug and Lettuce bar and restaurant in Victoria Street.

Jackie added: “Graham was a likeable personality and a terrific sense of humour, sometimes acidic but no one took offence.

“He would never be unhappy and was always on to the next thing.

“Graham didn t have good luck but he always used to say if it wasn t for bad luck, I would have no luck at all. He wasn t one to dwell on things.”

Mr Smith s funeral was attended by more than 400 people and mourners raised more than 1,000 for the cancer charities.

Graham s father, Colin Smith, said: “Graham had a heart of gold.

If anyone was ever in trouble Graham would be the first one there.

He was fiercely loyal to his friends and family.”

The fundraising evening will take place at The Slug and Lettuce from 8pm to 1pm with DJ RossCo leading the charity raffle from 10pm onwards.

The Slug and Lettuce has also created a cocktail, mixed with Mr Smith s favourite spirit – Jack Daniels, which will be sold on the evening with all proceeds donated to charity.

The 1,380-capacity venue, set in 33 acres of woodland, closed this month for a three-month investment that will transform the building into a luxury nightclub with three dance rooms, a stylish bar and pre-bookable VIP booths.

Luminar s regional director for the Midlands, Mark Molton, said: This is an iconic venue that has played a key role in the local night-time economy in St Albans for over 25 years.

The refurbishment, which will create 50 jobs, will run alongside the redevelopment of the Batchwood Sports Centre, due for completion in summer 2014, which will become an East of England regional centre of excellence with six indoor tennis courts and a special judo dojo facility.

Luminar is the UK s largest nightclub operator with 55 venues across the UK, from the Institute in Aberdeen to Cameo in Bournemouth, employing more than 2,500 people.

Van driver, Billy Hewitt, jailed after being caught two and a half times drink drive limit in St Albans

9:02am Monday 17th February 2014 in News1 By Court Reporter2

A Transit van driver who caused a policeman and a club doorman to jump out of the way as he drove off at speed outside a St Albans night club was jailed for two months on Friday.

Billy Hewitt, 27, of White Hart Drive, Hemel Hempstead, was convicted last month of dangerous driving in Victoria Street and Bricket Road, St Albans, on October 28 2012.

He was banned from driving for 15 months by Judge Stephen Warner and must take an extended retest before he gets his licence back.

The court heard Police Sergeant Duncan Prior put his hand up to stop the van after he heard it crash into a parked taxi in Victoria Street.

But Billy Hewitt ignored the officer and forced him and another man, John Curtis, to move out of the way.

Prosecutor Nick Bonehill said DS Prior was in his high visibility jacket on duty near the Havana Night Club at around half past one on the Sunday morning when he saw the van reverse at high speed into the taxi, which was parked at the junction of Victoria Street and Bricket Road.

“The van then accelerated off at speed into Bricket Road. It did a U turn at the entrance to the police station and drove back.

It went on the wrong side of the road, nearly missed another taxi and jumped a red light.

The registration number was noted and the van was found in a parking bay at the rear entrance of St Albans City3 Station.

Crowds gather at St Albans Philippines relief concert at the Pioneer Club starring Shikari Sound System and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly

Musicians played to a 150-strong crowd in St Albans to raise hundreds of pounds towards the Philippines relief effort.

Musicians Shikari Sound System and Get Cape Wear Cape Fly played at the charity concert, organised by St Albans and Philippines charity members at the Pioneer Club on February 22.

The crowd had travelled from Luton, Hatfield and one young Enter Shikari fan, Clare Margat from Picardie, France, had travelled by train to St Albans Station.

Get Cape s Sam Dunkworth spoke movingly about being “part of a global community” and while St Albans is helping the Philippines now, it may be in the future that people thousands of miles away will support Britain.

Enter Shikari s Chris Batten said: “The event was for such a good cause and we were honoured to be involved. It was great to see and feel the huge sense of community coming together towards a common goal. All the artists were fantastic and we re very grateful to everyone involved for helping to raise awareness.”

STAPH is aiming to raise funds to re-build St Joseph s School in a remote area of the Philippines near Tacloban.

Families there still have no electricity and financial aid has still not reached them.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

Other acts in Saturday s gig were Rob Lynch, TWOSIXONES and Engine-Earz.

All the musicians enjoyed a meal of freshly cooked noodles and spring rolls made for them by the STAPH team.

Former St Albans MP Kerry Pollard, who helped to set the charity up, said: “It is great that so many young people came along to hear the music and support our charity.

We look forward to holding other events for local youngsters and to encourage them to support this worthwhile cause.”
